-
Remove old seat from chair and remove the old fabric. You
may have to replace the cushion before you reupholster the seat.
- First strip or sand off any old paints/finishes.
For best results try hard to remove everything possible.
- After all stripping/sanding is completed, completely wipe down the chair to
remove all dust and dirt.
- Paint on 1 to 2
coats of primer - allow this to dry completely between coats.
- Apply 1 coat of gesso as a final primer - this will give you an even base coat to
paint on.
-
After choosing you colors, paint the different areas of
the chair with your basecoat color selections, For this part, I
painted Black, Lt. Buttermilk and Camel. Allow basecoat to dry.
- Using a
natural sea sponge, sponge the Honey Brown over all areas that
you base coated with Camel. You may need to tape off adjoining
areas.
- Using the
different stencils I choose - stencil all patterns with following
the directions in the stencil package.
- After all painting
on the chair has dried - apply several top coats of varnish.
- Going back to the
seat - I choose a heavy weight cotton fabric to cover the seat. This fabric has been pre-washed.
Using the Camel, Honey Brown and Black colors, add your
fabric medium to the paint (following manufacturers directions) and
stencil the overall design on the fabric.
- After all
painting is complete, heat set the paint and scotch guard the
fabric.
- Stretching the
fabric around the seat form - using a staple gun, staple the
fabric into place and reattach the seat to the chair.
Tips
- You may check with your local furniture refinishing companies for a quote on
commercially stripping your old chair.
(May not be that expensive).
- Make sure you cut
enough fabric to turn under for recovering the chair seat.
- Paint out color
choices on a sheet of paper - make sure they go together well.
